A Beautiful Mess

The long awaited cement workers have arrived this morning to tear out our driveway and pour us a new one.  They waste no time!

We have a 1950’s cement driveway under about 5 inches of asphalt!  All are crumbling and creating a mess along with too high a grade that floods the garage during rainstorms.

Also,  notice our deck and paths are covered with lumber…..

We are expanding the deck, doubling its size….the climbing hydragnea will stay and be incorporated into the deck.  Jeff plans to build a semi-circle bench around it.

The deck will extend all the way across the back of the house, and connect with the original deck.  The windows on the right (with a windowbox under them) will be replaced with a sliding door.  (Jackie’s old room.)

Jeff moved the barbeque to the driveway side of the deck, I wish we had done that ages ago!

Of course, Jeff is doing all the deck building himself.  Although he has had generous help from our future son-in-law, Kevin.  And Derek and TJ are just a phone call away.

The gazebo has turned into a work space, temporarily….with so much rain, it has come in handy:

We truly have a construction mess going on here…..but it will all be worth it in the end.

  1. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE IT!!!!!!!
It will take a tow truck to get you out of that house now!!!
You have my sympathy living through the hoopty though, this too shall pass!!

  2. Most definitely, Laurie! The existing doors come off of our kitchen and sun room. The new doors will be quite disconnected from that area of the house. They will bring the outdoors in to a dim area of the house.

  3. Its currently is my office, and I have a library table setup for mosaic or watercolor. Plan to keep it this way, very zen.

  4. I totally understand, Margie. I can see that coming for us, no time to waste. And this is much easier than the thought of MOVING!

  5. Wow..I admire your energy for such a project which will be so worth all the mess. Sadly, I shrink at such project. I love that the hydrangeas will be part of the deck.

  6. Wow, how exciting. Now that you’ve decided to stay you can have fun making all the improvements you’ve been thinking of.

  7. Looks like it will be wonderful when finished — all of it. Will the existing doors to the patio remain along with the new sliding door?
